Tsukimigaoka Hachiman Shrine

Tsukimigaoka Hachiman ShrineTsukimiokahachiman shirne used to be the local shrine of old kamiochiai village and so large as to include Hachiman park. As Shinjuku's bureau of sewage was established in the area of the shrine, it was moved to where it is today between 1961 and 1962. It is not clear when it was built, however it is said that Yoshiie Minamoto visited the shrine during his conquest in Oushu and prayed for victory by planting pine trees. It was named after the well inside the previous shrine of which water surface reflected the light of the moon (tsuki) in a beautiful manner. Many stone works were moved from the previous location to the present shrine. Among them, "koushintou" is the oldest cultural property in Shinjuku. Also, "waniguchi" and "Tanibuncho's picture" are designated as Shinjuku's cultural properties (although they are not exhibited in public).
